Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in accounting or a Public Accountant in good standing and experience equivalent to four years of full-time increasingly responsible professional cost accounting experience including, at least, one year of supervisory experience; additional graduate coursework in business administration with a major in accounting may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of one year; OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree including thirty-six quarter hours in accounting and experience equivalent to four years of full-time increasingly responsible professional cost accounting work including, at least, one year of supervisory experience; OR a Certified Public Accountant with the State of Tennessee and experience equivalent to three years of full-time increasingly responsible professional cost accounting experience including, at least, one year of supervisory experience.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Career Service positions. For Executive Service positions, Minimum Qualifications, Necessary Special Qualifications, and Examination Method are determined by the appointing authority.

Job Overview: Summary: Under general supervision, is responsible for cost accounting work of considerable difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: An employee in this class is responsible for developing and maintaining a cost accounting system. This class differs from those in the Accounting series in that an incumbent of the latter is not required to have expertise in the field of cost accounting.
Work Activities: 1. Assists in planning, budgeting and forecasting with direct supervision of the cost accounting operation including inventory control, evaluation and product pricing.

2. Assists in the coordination of internal procedures and operations.

3. Prepares reports for management highlighting deviations from standard cost and the reasons for deviations.

4. Prepares cost reports to assist in pricing products to assure that total cost is recovered in sales prices.

5. May develop a cost accounting system for a State manufacturing industry.

6. May supervise professional and sub-professional staff performing cost accounting work.
