Job Overview: Summary: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional legal work of routine difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: This is the entry-level class in the Attorney sub-series. An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of professional legal functions. This class differs from that of Attorney 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for performing professional legal services at the working level.

*An applicant appointed to this flexibly staffed class will be reclassified to the next higher class in the series after successful completion of a mandatory one-year training period; inadequate or marginal performance during the training period will result in automatic demotion or termination.
Work Activities: 1. Assists in the preparation of cases for litigation; performs legal research and drafts legal memoranda.

2. Researches agency rules and regulations and interprets legislative acts.

3. Researches and drafts proposed legislation; reviews statutes.

4. Consults with and advises agency personnel with regard to specific legal problems and responds to legal inquiries.

5. Reviews mortgages, leases, trust agreements and other contracts and documents; interviews witnesses and other individuals in gathering information.

6. Attends staff meetings and conferences.

7. Prepares a variety of legal records and reports.
