Education and Experience: Graduation from an approved school of law and experience equivalent to one year of responsible professional full-time experience in the practice of law.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a license to practice law in the State of Tennessee.

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Career Service positions. For Executive Service positions, Minimum Qualifications, Necessary Special Qualifications, and Examination Method are determined by the appointing authority.

Job Overview: Summary: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional legal work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features: *This is the working-level class in the Attorney sub-series. An employee in this class is responsible for performing a full range of professional legal work. This class is flexibly staffed with and differs from that of Attorney 1 in that an incumbent of the latter acts at the entry level. This class differs from Attorney 3 in that an incumbent of the latter supervises or manages subordinate attorneys within a department or division, or serves as the only attorney providing legal counsel for an agency.
Work Activities: 1. Investigates and prepares contested cases by taking depositions, interviewing witnesses, and drafting legal papers.

2. Provides technical assistance to personnel by interpreting legislation, reviewing proposed regulations, and rendering legal counsel.

3. Researches statutes, laws, and current case decisions and provides legal assistance relative to a wide range of problems.

4. Conducts public hearings, prepares legal petitions, and provides legal education to staff with lectures on pertinent legal issues.

5. Attends conferences, seminars, training sessions, and staff meetings.

6. Prepares and reviews contracts and legal agreements.

7. May act as chief legal counsel at sites such as Mental Health facilities.
