Wastewater Operator Job Description

Essential Job Duties 

A.  Operate wastewater plant

  • Monitors the operation of plant controls, valves, pumps, aeration, chlorine and sulfur dioxide injection systems, and activated sludge aeration systems, digesters, D.A.F. systems, grit chamber equipment, equalization basins, flow control systems, clarifiers, etc.
  • Directs the performance of operational tests, routine inspections, and preventive maintenance to wastewater plant equipment including cleaning equipment, facilities and tanks, unclogging sprayers and traps, and performing the shut-down and start-up of plant equipment as required.
  • Monitors and documents application of chemicals utilized in processing laboratory tests such as DO, PH and BOD’s as performed on samples collected.
  • Prepares requisitions for plant supplies and materials pertaining to pre-treatment; recommends the approval of invoices when received.
  • Assists in the planning, scheduling and direction of the operations and maintenance of the treatment plant.

Primary challenges of this position include keeping informed of the most current state and federal rules and regulations and assuring that the plant operates under those guidelines.

Equipment Operated

Operates all equipment used at wastewater plant as well as computers and other office equipment such as printers and fax machines

Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the City and wastewater or water treatment practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Senior Wastewater Operator. Is able to develop and implement long-term goals for the department as necessary in the promotion of effectiveness and efficiency. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department. Is knowledgeable and proficient with computers.


  • Language Skills:  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.

The work environment is loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment).

Minimum Requirements


Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of an Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent; plus three to four years of wastewater plant operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Operator’s Certification
